What you need for digging

The one essential is a garden kneeling mat and/or a pair of strap on knee pads. If you have a sturdy bucket and a small hand shovel you can bring them along but we do have several available.

You will need appropriate clothing and footwear. In the middle of the summer you will also need to consider protection from the sun. You may also want to use gloves if you normally do when handling soil in the garden.

We have a few archaeological trowels for loan but if you want to join us for digging on a regular basis you may want to buy your own. We recommend a WHS Tyzack 4″ (102 mm) trowel. These can be purchased online via several different websites. There is a choice between a wooden handle or a soft feel handle that costs a bit more. There is a well sourced Wikipedia article on the original manufacturer, later history of who made these trowels and their use for archaeology at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hunt_and_Sons

And finally don’t forget to bring a packed lunch and something to drink.
